Between total loss and immunity: does the crisis resilience thesis prove its worth in times of COVID-19 in Germany?

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine whether the thesis of a crisis-resilient sports sector can also be valid for the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. In fact, the sport sector shows that it has had to weather many crises and has weathered them very well. This also applies to the COVID-19 crisis, as far as this can be determined at this point in time. Many reasons are listed for this in this chapter. The perhaps most important reason is that sport's resilience to crisis is a reflection of its success. Sport is a response to important functional needs of society and it meets the official goals of the state and the personal interests of politicians. Sport has become a deep component of culture and is supported by fans. Scandals are not blamed on sport and its organizations, but on individuals with weak characters
