Is it ethical to teach economics without ecological economics in the context of a climate emergency?

Abstract

In this chapter we argue it is unethical to teach economics without ecological economics because we are in a climate emergency. Moreover, we are in a climate emergency, in part, because of the role played by economics. We begin by distinguishing the ‘right thing to do’ from the more nuanced issue of knowing or answering the question, ‘What is the right thing to do?’. We then move onto the significance of this for economics in the context of climate emergency, before distinguishing between ecological economics and mainstream and environmental economics as a precursor to briefly addressing the issue for economics of, ‘What is the right thing to do, to help others do the right thing?’ This is a matter informed by the previously suggested existential ethical imperative.
