Abstract

Multinational corporations (MNC) heavily rely on cascading compliance to promote sustainability along their GVCs, yet there is mounting evidence that social and environmental violations continue to occur unchecked. In this chapter, we discuss how cascading compliance is intended to work and suggest why it often fails. Our key assertion is that the values, perspectives, and capabilities of diverse international suppliers profoundly affect the ability of lead MNCs to cascade social and environmental responsibilities but that these factors are often overlooked in the compliance literature.
