Abstract

We develop a critical review of the management literature on corporate social responsibility (CSR) of multinational corporations (MNCs) based on the institutional perspective. We identify 89 articles on this topic from 19 journals, published between 2004 and 2022. Our review suggests that three strands of institutional theory have been used to study the CSR of MNCs, namely organizational institutionalism, institutional economics, and comparative institutionalism. Out of these three, organizational institutionalism has been the most used framework to date. For each of these three strands of inquiry, we discuss the main propositions, explanatory mechanisms, key constructs, and research findings. Drawing on the identified trends and research gaps, we conclude by proposing several directions for future research in this area.
