Multinationals and cross-sector partnerships: building social resilience through collective entrepreneurship

Abstract

Recent research and practical understanding have identified entrepreneurial collaboration among multinational enterprises and governmental and nongovernmental organizations as potential responses to helping local and global communities achieve resilience in the face of emerging “grand challenges.” In this chapter, we review some of this research and propose a model to guide scholarship and practice around these cross-sector partnerships. We begin by surveying the theoretical foundation that supports the potential impact of collective action and review the literature on the potential complementarities among organizations from these three sectors. We then introduce a model to frame when and how these partnerships can contribute to resilience among regions and localities that are facing threats from challenges such as climate change, displacement of individuals, and others. We provide two examples of partnerships that appear to have contributed to this resilience and conclude with implications for research and practice.
