Abstract

The fintech hype is no different from the dot-com hype that ended with a bursting of a bubble caused by the hype. Extravagant and inflated (even dishonest) claims are used to pump up fintech, with respect to the ability to disrupt the status quo, and some claims are made about the importance of fintech in our lives. Some general but ludicrous claims are made to hype fintech, such as the claim that fintech is conducive to the eradication of poverty and inequality. In reality, the descriptions of fintech are frothy and immature, and only contagious enthusiasm has led to the pouring of money into fintech firms. It is concluded that fintech is grossly hyped and that it is starting to look like a fad.
