Death management in public administration: lessons from the front lines

Abstract

How do you handle death? How do we plan for death? What about the public servants who live with death each day? How do they handle it? How do they cope? The COVID-19 pandemic brought us all face-to-face with death, and also brought more attention to the public servants who deal with death. They work every day to aid families and loved ones cope with sometimes tragic deaths. The public service question relates to how these public servants affect the citizen-state encounter. This chapter draws lessons from interviews with US-based municipal cemetery managers, and medical examiners and coroners. The purpose is to use these lessons to improve the citizen-state encounter and help other public servants engage with each other and the public.
