Abstract

The chapter proposes a classification of new models of protection and collective representation of contingent workers, starting from the empirical analysis of the six cases in Italy and Spain. The categorisation of these experiences is based on two dimensions of analysis: the tension between voice and entry as type of action implemented; the dichotomy between bottom-up and top-down origin in terms of trajectory of launch. Four distinctive models emerge from the intersection of these two interpretative axes: mobilisation; organising; cooperation; and networking. Commonalities to all the four clusters - organisational structure, goals, and strategies - and distinctive traits of each model are discussed in depth. Our analysis sheds also light on strengths and transferability of the ideal typical models proposed; limitation and constraints; as well as tensions, osmosis between the various quadrants and the potential evolutions and mutual interference between them.
