Understanding solidarity practices with refugees

Abstract

This chapter offers a conceptualisation and typology of four forms of solidarity: urban, rural, maritime, and trans-local. We base our typology on our own work and other scholarly studies from especially Europe and Latin America. We argue that solidarity must be understood from a relational and socio-spatial perspective and furthermore argue that these perspectives are important as solidarity practices differ according to the place in which they are produced. The typology is not exhaustive of all forms of solidarity with refugees, but we argue that the three spaces of production of solidarity (urban, rural and maritime) and one scale (the trans-local) offer us the conceptual tools to identify and analyse a broad variety of solidarity practices as we have seen them emerge over the last decade.
