IP management in the start-up lifecycle

Abstract

New ventures face a series of intellectual property (IP) challenges in their life cycle. This chapter reviews the academic literature in management, strategy and law and distills three practically relevant findings from it. First, IP management is a moving target, continuously evolving over the course of the life cycle. Second, IP management is inextricably intertwined with venture legitimacy, which makes it particularly valuable to startups that cannot leverage long track record of successes. Third, the complexity of IP management derives also from the need to manage IP internationally, which requires entrepreneurs to adjust their blueprints for IP management. The chapter explores the role of IP-related dilemmas over the life cycle of startups and discusses the most frequent tradeoffs founders face in their IP strategy.
