Abstract

The chapter describes the author's experiences in R&D projects at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and as a co-founder of a start-up company. Based on application-oriented research in the field of medical technology, the processes that led to the establishment of Intellectual Property (IP) and to the founding of the start-up are described. In particular, the article deals with the way universities deal with applied research, the involvement of industrial partners and the founding of start-ups by university employees. It also describes the role played by student participation and the theses they produced, e.g. bachelor and master theses, and dissertations. The acquisition of research funds as well as different types of donors are discussed. The conditions of university-employed scientists vary greatly from university to university and from country to country.
