Back to a high-inflation regime? The Argentine economy from the 2000s to the COVID-19 crisis

Abstract

This chapter examines if under the impact of the current Covid-19 pandemic, the Argentine economy has not returned to the High-Inflation Regime (HIR) that prevailed during the 1970/1980. A HIR was notoriously presented by Frenkel at the time, and those features are tested for the present situation. HIR deals with how agents adapt to a persistent inflationary environment, and Argentina has had a long history of inflation until the 1990s. But recent years have seen inflation rise and, amid the pandemic impact, gained speed. Hence, it is sustained that HIR has returned to the country.
