In: The Elgar Companion to Information Economics

Abstract

The chapter discusses the interdependence between information flows and income distribution. Its goals are to present mechanisms that shape the income distribution, to demonstrate differences between the traditional perspective of information economics accentuating scarcity of information and the new perspective highlighting information abundance, and to discuss some implications of information flows for individual perception of income inequalities and life satisfaction (referring to relative deprivation, job satisfaction and playbour). The chapter pays special attention to rents and rent-seeking activities which are specific mediators between information imperfections and income distribution, leading inter alia to the excessive skewness of income distribution.
