Critical discourse analysis, gender, and sport management

Abstract

With the growing interest in discourses around gender in sport management research, critical discourse analysis (CDA) offers a useful approach to support this work. CDA draws attention to the power of discourses and discursive practices to either reinforce the status quo or to challenge it. My aim with this chapter is to highlight the value of CDA for exploring discourses of gender in sport management. First, I discuss the concept of discourse and highlight sport management research on gendered discourses. Second, I introduce CDA. Third, I draw attention to the exercise of power, a concept that needs more attention in sport management. Last, I offer suggestions for extending CDA in future sport management research.
