Heteronormativity and gender-based violence in Sport for Development

Abstract

In this chapter, we explore how queer theory and Sport for Development (SfD) programs focused on gender-based violence (GBV) prevention might work towards challenging heteronormative approaches to sport that reinforce binary categories of gender. To do so, we consider how queer theory and GBV are positioned in and through SfD. Despite efforts made by SfD programs to promote GBV prevention, gendered and heteronormative violence still permeate in sporting spaces. In a partial effort to address such concerns, this chapter critically examines how SfD perpetuates heteronormative narratives of gender and how this may (re)produce exclusion and violence for queer-identifying participants. Hence, incorporating perspectives of queer theory into SfD programs may promote access to sporting spaces for queer people. Drawing on two SfD program examples, we critically explore new potential directions for SfD researchers and practitioners that may dismantle heteronormativity GBV in sporting spaces.
