A move towards a framework for materials

Abstract

This text describes a model for categorizing materials used in service design. The model categorizes materials into three groups: traditional design materials, co-design materials, and catalyst materials. Traditional design materials are materials that can be formed by a designer alone, but may also be best created through a co-design process. Co-design materials are materials that require the designer to work with a team. Catalyst materials are materials that catalyze the co-design process and do not directly form the outcomes. The model is useful for analyzing materials and for discussing new materials. The model also has an analytic and generative character, where materials can be positioned in different tensions within the model, or be described as a tension field within the model.
