Recent developments among dairy cooperatives in the European Union

Abstract

The dairy sector in the European Union (EU) has undergone major changes in recent decades. These changes have also affected dairy cooperatives which hold significant market shares in many Member States of the EU. In this chapter we give an overview of important developments in the sector and review the current literature on EU dairy cooperatives. In addition, we use data from an enterprise database to provide a unique description of the development of dairy cooperatives and investor-owned dairies in different Member States of the EU. We end the chapter by highlighting research gaps and providing avenues for future research.
