Social capital and network processes in the making of social class inequality: debates, concepts and measurement

Abstract

The chapter reviews debates on social class and inequality, focusing on the contribution of social network analysis in understanding structural mechanisms that bring about inequality. First, the authors consider social class definitions and current measurement strategies. Next, the chapter discusses assumptions and implications of a collective definition of social capital vis-à-vis egocentric approaches, providing a typology of social capital processes. The third part illustrates the contributions of social capital to the analysis of social class and inequality, examining interactional, social exchange and cultural approaches. The conclusion proposes directions for future research on social capital and inequality.
