Abstract

In this chapter, the authors argue that applying modern conceptualizations of social capital to youth mentoring yields new ideas on how to use mentoring to redress inequalities for minoritized and marginalized youth. The chapter begins with definitions and background for both mentoring and social capital, before moving into a critique of the current state of youth mentoring when viewed through the lens of social capital. Modern conceptualizations of social capital are discussed, namely the Community Cultural Wealth model and the “anchor versus web” perspective in youth mentoring. The chapter ends with a call for a paradigm shift and reimagines what youth mentoring could be if this shift is undertaken. Taken together, the chapter hopes for a version of youth mentoring that truly capitalizes on the assets of all young people to support equity and healthy development for all.
