Groups and teams in the Asia-Pacific

Abstract

Research on groups and teams has, as with most organizational research, largely been conceptualized in the West and extended to the East. However, the context in which teams are embedded have a substantial influence on their processes and effectiveness. Countries in the Asia-Pacific differ from the West, and each other, not only in terms of their national and societal culture but also their political, legal, and economic environment. It is imperative that we bring a more nuanced gaze to the study of team dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region. The author reviews the empirical research on groups and teams in the Asia-Pacific over the last ten years and synthesizes this research using the input-process/emergent state-output framework as well as the contextual factors affecting the framework - explicitly or implicitly. The author concludes with specific directions for future research and managerial implications for designing, participating in, and/or leading teams in the region.
