Driving creativity and innovation in Asia

Abstract

Businesses worldwide are more dependent than ever on creative ideas and innovative solutions to remain competitive amidst increasingly volatile market conditions. With Asia’s rising position in the global economy, pressure is mounting for the region to ramp up its creative capacities to meet such global challenges. Asia, however, has long been perceived as being less creative than its Western counterparts, given its cultural tendencies to value pragmatism and uncertainty avoidance and a pedagogical orientation that emphasizes convergent thinking. Does Asia truly fall short on creativity and innovation? If so, how can we drive greater levels of creativity and innovation in the region? In this chapter, the authors discuss Asians’ niche of incremental (versus radical) creativity and suggest ways to further elevate their creative capability. They then expound upon Asia’s unique cultural backdrop and offer some suggestions towards boosting creativity and innovation in light of these cultural characteristics. The authors end the chapter by offering directions for future research.
