The post-pandemic workplace: issues and insights for future research and action

Abstract

Many employees around the world have been forced to work in a completely different setting since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. Numerous studies have been done to understand the changes in the workplace and its impact on employees, leaders and organizations. This chapter reviews 211 articles related to the pandemic and the workplace published between 2019 and 2021. Thematic analysis was conducted and we identified seven overarching themes: (1) key factors affecting the workplace due to COVID-19, (2) disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on the workforce, (3) post-pandemic working approach, (4) challenges that new working approaches pose to the organization and employees, (5) impact of the new working approaches on employee wellbeing, (6) effective leadership in the post-pandemic era, and (7) organizational and social support that could help employees cope with the crisis. The authors discuss each theme and its implications on the contemporary and future workplace.
