Abstract

This chapter introduces the Research Handbook on Ethical Consumption and synthesises the contributions, features and research directions of the chapters. The chapter highlights the development of ethical and sustainable consumption scholarship from the 1980s/1990s to the present day and provides an overview of the current state of research in this area. The chapter highlights the sections of the handbook and their contributions, both theoretical and empirical, to Values of the Ethical Consumer, Ethical Food and Drink, Ethical Clothing, Labelling, and Innovation and Technology. In doing so the chapter underscores the interdisciplinary nature of the area and the multiple audiences for this type of research. Finally, the chapter highlights future research directions for ethical and sustainable consumer researchers.
