Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the right to remedy as is recognized in international human rights law to help explain how it is incorporated into the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights to apply to individuals and communities negatively impacted by business activity. It covers the procedural and substantive aspect of remedy while also explaining how a “system of remedy” operates and includes non-judicial grievance mechanisms. With this background, the chapter offers a sequence of teaching lessons that may be done separately or as a series of activities to help delve into the specific issues that arise with regard to non-judicial remedies that are used for business accountability.
