The United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights

Abstract

Since 2011, the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) have provided a conceptual framework and common language for business and human rights. The UNGPs set an expectation that business enterprises will respect human rights, states will protect against human rights violations connected to business activity, and affected individuals will have access to effective remedy. A typical business and human rights (BHR) course covers most, if not all, of the principal issues addressed by the UNGPs. This chapter summarizes the history and provisions of the UNGPs, highlights key issues surrounding their implementation, and describes approaches for introducing the UNGPs to BHR students.
