Abstract

Land sits at the nexus of business and human rights (BHR). Land is an essential component of global supply chains and of many business models. Businesses frequently cannot avoid questions of land tenure rights and governance within their operations. Land is increasingly recognized as a standalone human right and is fundamental to a host of other internationally recognized human rights. This chapter defines land rights in the context of BHR, describes the opportunity for BHR regarding land rights, provides an overview of international human rights guidance on land rights relevant to business actors, outlines incentives and challenges for companies in respecting land rights, and provides a series of teaching approaches and key questions for teaching land rights.
