Abstract

Business and human rights (BHR) sits at the intersection of two foundational disciplines: human rights and corporate responsibility. Most BHR courses address some of the foundations and core concepts underlying corporate responsibility directly or at least implicitly, such as when tying it to corporate purpose, the “business case” for human rights responsibility, or more generally the role of business in society. This chapter provides an overview of the conceptual foundations of corporate responsibility, takes a critical look at the limitations of some common corporate responsibility interpretations, and, finally, relates the concept of corporate social responsibility in particular to the BHR discussion.
