Multistakeholder human rights initiatives

Abstract

Multistakeholder initiatives (MSIs) have emerged in response to governance gaps in a globalized economy. Stakeholders from business, civil society, academia, investors, and sometimes governments use MSI platforms to pool knowledge and resources to develop and enforce industry-specific standards for challenges that no actor alone can address. The chapter covers typical organizational challenges of MSIs as well as criteria for strong human rights governance MSIs. Understanding the role of MSIs in the context of business and human rights is particularly relevant in the context of emerging mandatory human rights due diligence. MSIs can be seen as a vehicle through which companies engage in due diligence.
