Deaths of despair

Abstract

The three Deaths of Despair that are the subject of this chapter were identified and discussed by Anne Case and Angus Deaton. Drug addiction, suicide and alcohol abuse have ravaged many communities in each of the six silos identified in Chapter 2. When we examine each of the three "Deaths", we find that there are many things that the three communities share, such a lack of access to medical facilities, education that results in a marketable skill, economic programs to reintegrate those who have been displaced by technology or by large scale production, and a government that has failed to control opioids and access to guns. Other key words would include: income distribution, Geography of pain, population density, "The Utah paradox", and happiness.
