Specification of the geographies that divide us

Abstract

The areas that define the "silos" into which Americans have been cosseted are identified: urban and rural, city and town, and Blue state and Red state. Individuals in some of these habitational areas have been left out of the progress in the areas of public policy for the past several years, or decades. Others have benefitted from government policy. These two groups form the central categories of Americans that have chosen to be situated in one silo or another. In this chapter we examine the qualities of each of the six areas into which we have been divided. As we go through the book we will identify specific policies on which individuals in different silos can come to positive agreement. The primary words to be highlighted are the six silos: urban and rural, city and town and Blue state and Red state.
