The war of ideas: a comparison of the U.S. and Europe

Abstract

This chapter discussed neoliberalism as a global ideology which has conquered the U.S., Europe, and Germany. From a Keynesian standpoint, neoliberal economic policy design can be viewed as the ultimate cause of increased income inequality and the proclivity to economic stagnation. Just over 30 years ago wages started to stagnate and income inequality started to explode in both the U.S. and Europe. A big reason was working families lost the war of ideas regarding design of economic policy. The global political economic challenge is to bend the arc of history away from neoliberalism and back toward social democratic Keynesianism which, after World War II, showed how to deliver shared prosperity and full employment. Meeting that challenge requires winning the war of ideas.
