Innovative measure of urban sustainability: potentialities and weaknesses of the 'Mandala SDG'

Abstract

We contribute to the literature by characterizing and interpreting frugal innovation thanks to the concept of the technological paradigm. Firstly, we look inside the black box of frugal technologies with the notion of the micro-technological paradigm in order to bring out the ‘technological’ structure of frugal innovation. Based on the concepts of the exaptation process, technological complexity and architectural change, our analysis enables us to identify the main micro trends related to technological frugality as a new direction of technological change: products with fewer artefacts, decreasing technological complexity, or design simplification. Secondly, the societal and sustainable properties of technological frugality are identified through the lens of the techno-economic paradigm approach. Our inputs to the literature on frugal innovation are drawn from the evolutionary perspectives of the development of technologies.
