Abstract

Artificial intelligence interprets and learns from data to achieve goals. The authors identify some exciting developments in AI and some potential areas for concern. They compare AI and human functions and present a framework for understanding AI based on frequency and types of activities. They also explain the consequences of AI in three areas: (1) development processes behind AI, (2) its deployment in different sectors of the economy, and (3) its effects on labor. AI can improve work by automating tasks that are repetitive or time-consuming and it can assist workers in making better decisions using systems that provide real-time data and insights. It affects work in several sectors of the economy: agriculture, health care, infrastructure, law, education, security, government services, financial services, and the production of goods. While AI will improve many aspects of work and society, there will also be some negative consequences that require policy solutions.
