Rethinking assistive technology research and the evidencing of assistive technology outcomes

Abstract

The field of assistive technology (AT) has evolved considerably over the past 40 years. Three pillars are notable for understanding the drivers of change during this period: policy, innovative product development and research. This chapter will describe the evolution of AT in the context of the United States (US) and will offer observations about how the developments are similar/different in the context of the global adoption of AT. In considering the future of AT research, the potential for imminent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve the evidencing of outcomes of AT use will be discussed. Using examples from many disciplines, this chapter will challenge readers to rethink the traditional approach to assistive technology research and how digital data streams could fundamentally alter the future of assistive technology.
