A UK example of the relationship between ATech research and ATech policy

Abstract

In this chapter we seek to provide a picture of the current relationship between research and policy in the Accessible and Assistive Technology (ATech) field by investigating what kinds of evidence the UK government cites in its policy statements on ATech. In doing so, we offer as a case example an examination of how the National Disability Strategy used UK-funded ATech research to justify or underpin its proposed commitments. Drawing on this examination we make observations regarding the openness, recency and broadness of the research that UK policy engages with. Based on these observations we make two recommendations to promote the better utilisation of government-funded academic ATech research by policy makers.
