Humboldt and the modern research university: the ivory tower?

Abstract

The implementation in 1810, by Humboldt, of the Berlin University marks the advent of the modern research university and created a model that has spread to many other countries and regions, including the US. Recent research questions the role model of Humboldt’s idea for several reasons, including the fact that Humboldt’s manuscripts were not published until the celebrations of the first centenary of the foundation of Berlin University. However, Humboldt’s idea came back as a myth and is still present in the minds of many academics. Several authors have tried to explain the persistence of the myth despite its progressive dissociation from the real situation of universities as higher education systems moved from elite to mass, and external pressures transformed the university from being an institution into an organization providing services to society and the economy.
