Social inequalities in higher education participation

Abstract

This chapter focuses on inequalities in access and participation in higher education based on social background. We first provide a multidimensional definition and present indicators for measuring social inequalities in participation in higher education. We then discuss vertical inequalities as well as some theoretical arguments and original analyses on their trends over time from a comparative perspective. We then present the main theories and patterns of horizontal inequalities related to enrolment in various fields of study and institutions. The last section discusses the predominant explanations of inequalities related to social background by reviewing micro-level mechanisms (rational choice theories, cultural and social capital theories) and how they interact with institutional characteristics to exacerbate or mitigate inequity in participation in higher education.
