Introduction: a framework of analysis of the relationship between religion and public administration

Abstract

Chapter 1 provides an overview of the theoretical framework used to study of the influence of religion on public administration (PA). It presents the rationale for a book on the relationship of religion and PA - religion is part and parcel of the context that affects the functioning of PA - and by defining concepts such as modernity and secularity. By linking religion, context, and public administration, this chapter outlines how religion as both a personality system and an ideational base affects PA, mediated by the religious regime of the given jurisdiction. The work of prominent philosophers and sociologists of religion such as Weber, Turner, and Taylor are discussed. The chapter concludes with a preview of all the themes analysed in the book.
