Abstract

The process of the European integration is in the biggest crisis, or rather cluster of crises, since its beginning. One of them being imploding relations with the United States. At the same time, during the presidency of Donald Trump, United States is going through politically and socially tumultuous time, with hyper-polarisation of the society dividing Americans even stronger than before. Though many of the interests of both compound polities seem to be aligned, there is a growing mistrust between leaders on both sides of the Atlantic. Therefore the question about causes of the rift arises. In this article I try to signal an answer, looking at long-term socio-political trends on the global scale, but also within both polities. The aim is to rethink the relation between globalisation and domestic political trends and show how they interact with transatlantic relations.
