Good governance

Abstract

Although its initial concerns were economic, the OECD has become involved increasingly in promoting good governance. The concept of ‘good governance’ is somewhat contested, but the OECD has approached it in several ways. One has been through improving public management within its member countries, as well as in candidate countries of the European Union. There has also been a major emphasis on improving the budget process and on improving the allocation of public funds. The OECD has also become involved in promoting ideas about strategic management and the capacity of governments to plan for the future, and to be resilient in the face of change.
