Psychodynamic leadership in healthcare settings

Abstract

Understanding what healthcare leaders can do to ensure that health service staff are valued, supported and treated with care and respect is important, as care delivery and patient outcomes are greatly influenced by staff wellbeing. This chapter considers psychodynamic concepts, theories and frameworks that can be applied to understand and improve how healthcare leaders relate to their followers and each other. Psychodynamic theory helps to shed light on the unconscious motives underlying leader and follower behaviours when considered in a complementary manner alongside other established leadership theories. Despite this advantage, the psychodynamic leadership approach may be difficult to understand by leaders without a mental health clinical background or too confrontational a framework for some leaders to work within. Psychodynamic leadership development, in the form of education, supervision and coaching, seeks to impart healthcare leaders with deeper insights into numerous leadership scenarios, thereby enhancing their effectiveness and that of their organisations.
