Abstract

Healthcare managers and leaders are a critical component of the workforce whose behaviours influence staff and patient outcomes. A range of structural factors impact on healthcare systems with implications for leadership and leadership development. Adult learning theory and psychological development theories underpin development. The purpose and outcomes of development are diverse and can be captured in eight distinct categories combining structure (emergent or planned) with focus (individual or interdependent) which yields four distinct types of leadership development. A range of interventions, experiences or opportunities associated with healthcare leadership development, align with this typology. Two examples, which are used extensively in healthcare, multiple source feedback and executive coaching, are explored. The evidence base in relation to what works in leadership development points to the need for greater rigour and relevance. Implications for healthcare leadership development practice are identified.
