Healthcare leadership on the front line: meanings, value and potential

Abstract

Healthcare organizations worldwide have tried to strengthen professionals’ leadership skills by investing in leadership development programmes (Croft, Currie and Lockett, 2015a; Dubois et al., 2012). The largest group of care professionals - those who have completed a secondary vocational education and training programme (VET), such as practical nurses and caregivers who help with daily activities - are however seldomly asked to attend. This empirical study from the Netherlands shows that it is critical to invest in VET-qualified care professionals. It helps grow the professionals we need in order to build a solid foundation for the future of healthcare. The participants in this research were used to putting task completion first in their work, to the detriment of their own and others’ needs. During the course of the programme, however, the emotional and relational aspects of their work became increasingly important to them. They regained a sense of satisfaction in their work and became resilient and agile when it comes to solving day-to-day issues in healthcare delivery.
