Abstract

During the colonial era, economic strategies and policies were shaped by both the colonizers, and in some cases, even the colonized as occupying powers sometimes sought to minimize resistance. This chapter reviews a selection of key development indicators and trends in Sub-Saharan Africa today in order to set the stage for the chapters to follow. Data are provided on macroeconomic performance and structure, trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), employment, economic governance, socioeconomic well-being, and environmental sustainability trends. Whenever possible, particular sections or data sets are linked to relevant Handbook chapters that follow in the main text. The chapter closes with a synthesis, summary of the main development trends, opportunities, and challenges moving forward.
