Abstract

Fisheries are critical to the livelihoods of millions of people living in rural areas of the African continent. This chapter introduces the importance of the fisheries sector to national economies and rural livelihoods, reviewing the economic and social importance of the sector; the characteristics, importance, and gendered nature of small-scale fisheries; the contribution of aquaculture to fish production; the management of fisheries; and challenges to the sector, with a focus on climate change, illegalities and the blue economy. The chapter demonstrates how important the sector is, yet also how many significant challenges there are to its future. Investment in fisheries management by national governments and greater support is essential to enable the sector to continue to make the vital contributions it does to livelihoods, food security and national revenue.
