Abstract

This chapter contributes to the discussion of race and economic development through an analysis of the contesting narratives and theories on the political economy of underdevelopment. The first part of the chapter investigates the origins of ‘development’, tracing it to the ‘Eurocentric’ discourse of the rise of capitalism before moving to an analysis of ‘capitalism as development’ (i.e. development and modernisation theories) that emerged in the post-World War II period. The second part of the chapter surveys some of the alternative explanations to underdevelopment, focusing on Pan-Africanism and racial capitalism. The aim of this piece is to move beyond discussions of representation of race and bring to the fore a few of the alternative concepts and critiques of the relationship between race and the economy formulated in Africa.
