Abstract

In the last ten years, founders in Germany launched a larger number of rapidly growing companies and helped to develop a globally visible startup scene. In this process, Berlin and Munich have positioned themselves as leading national clusters. Despite this progress in cluster dynamics and its strong industry base, the Munich ecosystem is still not producing enough new fast growing, global companies. The Bavarian cluster has not been able to keep up with the startup success in worldwide leading clusters like Silicon Valley and Beijing. The massive ramp up of TUM's and UnternehmerTUM's entrepreneurship activities have already shown a significant increase in the startup output. With over 80 new startups p.a. and an annual investments volume of over one billion US$, the university and its entrepreneurship center are the cradle of around 10% of Germany's new, VC-backed tech ventures. To reach the same cluster dynamics level as Silicon Valley or Beijing, Munich has to improve its performance in the next decade again, by a factor of five to ten.
