Abstract

The chapter describes the recent transformation of the Brazilian innovation ecosystem, focusing primarily on S√£o Paulo, which serves as the core of a network of regional innovation hubs in Brazil. The path to scale took decades. A previous surge in startup investment during the dot-com years (1995-2000) eventually fizzled and did not lead to sustained ecosystem growth. And despite rapid economic growth over the following decade, Brazil endured a long "nuclear winter of tech" between 2001-2009. After a gradual restart, the innovation ecosystem took off between 2015-2021 when Brazil experienced exceptional growth in VC funding, successful startups, and institutions that support entrepreneurship. This recent boom - much larger and more sustainable - happened amid political turmoil, two recessions, and the Covid-19 pandemic. What factors contributed to this remarkable take-off? And, in turn, how is the Brazilian innovation ecosystem helping to address the pandemic and other health, social, and environmental challenges?
