Teaching mixed methods research to address diverse learners' needs: pedagogical strategies and adaptations

With the growing demand for mixed methods research (MMR) there is a similarly increased interest in learning about this research approach. Multiple training opportunities exist to help researchers build their MMR capacity ranging from formal courses and programs, to training certificates, to workshops and webinars. However, teaching MMR is becoming more complex and specialised due to the need to diversify pedagogical approaches to address varied learners’ needs. Furthermore, there is limited literature on how to teach MMR for different learners. This chapter discusses the authors’ experiences of teaching MMR in a variety of courses guided by the socio-ecological framework for MMR. The authors describe six types of pedagogical strategies addressing different teaching goals and discuss how they can be adapted to varied learning contexts. The chapter concludes with recommendations to other instructors who teach MMR and calls for further exploration of MMR pedagogy.
