Research methods learning in temporary online communities during Covid-19

Abstract

This chapter explores the use of online workshops for research methods education in a time of global crisis. The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted social research and the chapter draws on material generated in a study exploring this. Changing Research Practices: Undertaking Social Science Research in the Context of Covid-19 was conducted in the UK and involved researchers with experiences of adapting, planning and teaching methods during the pandemic in discussion of practices and adaptations. The approach of online knowledge exchange workshops incorporating visual metaphors offered participants a space to share ideas. In this researcher-facilitated semi-informal peer learning, biographical and affective elements intersected with research methods learning/teaching/sharing. The chapter adds to literature about methods learning in different contexts and contributes to understanding educational relations in dynamic, uncertain times.
